Film School + destroyed 50mm f/1.8 :(

Tue Nov 17, 2009, 3:02 PM
Howdy folks! It's been a while, huh? I've been busy as fook with film school but it's freaking awesome! I can't believe how much I've learnt in just 8 weeks at CFS... it's been intense but so much fun and it feels really right :D the people are awesome too, there's always a buzz of excitement and creativity about with them!

I know I haven't uploaded photos in ages, anyone still even watching? Not that many (if ANY) of you actually read my crummy (usually rant-filled) journal posts :P! I have still been taking lots of photos but after long long weeks of running about like a loon I find little energy to edit or post online... I've gotten so behind that I feel bad excluding my pervious efforts and don't want to put newer works up until they are, if you catch my drift? Hopefully I'll sit down and sort through my photos soon and throw a bunch in your pretty directions for you to peer at.

In happy news, it's my darling sister Lucy's birthday today :D She is now 8 years old... I saw a picture of her at her party today in a little frame on the shelf from when she was a toddler and it's actually crazy how quickly she's grown... and yet how she hasn't seemed to change!
I was really excited about her birthday, I remember it being such a magical time when I had a birthday at that age... ahh, back in the day! It's funny how I'm thinking/saying all these things I always rolled my eyes at when I was younger! To my little cousin Lily today: "WOW you've grown! I haven't seen you since you were yay high, I bet you don't even remember me?!", and to Lucy: "You've grown up so fast!" haha, makes me feel old!

In sad news, RIP my canon 50mm 1.8 :'( I totally destroyed it today while fiddling with the focus on manual... it jammed, I forced it (rule no.1: don't force these things. I knew I'd regret but I was hoping it would just un-jam!) and it screwed up more, then I forced it even more about 59044352453452567380 more times and now it's totally fucked :(! Might try and upgrade to a 1.4 over christmas...! £250 doesn't seem as much money after the amount I've wasted on social things, books, DVDs, lunches and travel in the past month and a half :|

Wow I'm waffling on! How I always manage to when I intended to write just a few lines ALWAYS surprises me.

This week at CFS we've been having Cinematography classes and it's just starting to sink in JUST how much more there is to film than photography! I'm lucky in that I was trained for film photography at school, because it's made it very easy to adapt to/understand the process of Super 16mm which we're learning at the moment (35mm soon too, woop!) especially with the whole ISO (aka ASA in film terms!), DoF/Apertures and lightmeter stuff. Hopefully will be shooting my first OWN short film on Friday with the twins, I'll keep you posted if it's any good :P! We shot a group short film in Ireland which I luckily got to both direct and DoP (camera work/visuals) at parts (they decided our roles for us and some students didn't get to do either! Only me and one other student got to do both so I was lucky really). The shoot was really fun but intense and exhausting... and chaotic!
We shot in this amazingly massive country estate MANSION and got to stay there too, so it was a really awesome experience overall!

This is far too long by about ten paragraphs, which is impressive as this is only the sixth... but you get the point and I shall stop here.
Ciao x

In a word: Superb! You're right in what you say about cameras and photographers - but I have a feeling that you needn't worry! Incredibly beautiful shots showing you have an amazing eye! :)

You just have to go on when it is worst and most helpless - there is just one thing to do ... and that is to go straight on through to the end of the damn thing.
